memoQ 9: Tags and formatting

Tags should remain the same in the target as they are in the source. memoQ makes a distinction between different types of tags, formatting, structural and inline tags.

  • Simple formatting such as bold, italics and underline doesn't normally carry tagging. Reproduce it manually in the target using CTRL + B, CTRL + I and CTRL + U.
  • More complex structural formatting is indicated by tags such as {1}, {2}, {3}. These should be reproduced as they are in the target, and their order cannot be changed.
  • Inline tags from html files and xml base formats such as IDML, XLIFF, SDLXLIFF show as tags where you can see the tag content. The order of inline tags can usually be changed but note the following:
  • You must never break the XML structure by removing or adding tags, or by nesting tags incorrectly. This is a very common case when XML based files cannot be exported from memoQ. Some inline tags are placeholders (this is for example usually the case with SDLXLIFF) that often are only identified with a letter and a number in an attribute, eg <g =id"1">. You must not change the order of these tags, as indicated by the attribute, as this will break the XML.

    Working with tags in memoQ

memoQ has multiple settings and options you can use to deal with tags. You can find them all under the Edit ribbon.

    Tag Insertion

This button turns the automatic tag insertion on or off. When active, tags are automatically inserted in your target cell. Default shortcut: F6

    Copy Next Tag Sequence

This button copies the next sequence of tags into the target cell. A tag sequence means all the tags immediately following each other, no matter what kind of tags (inline tag or memoQ tag). If the next tag sequence has already been inserted into the target, then the following sequence is inserted. If you selected some text in the target, then the selected text is not overwritten, but the next tag pair from the source is inserted around the selection, wrapping it neatly. Default shortcut: F9.

    Inline Tags

This button contains display alternatives for tags.

    • Show Short Inline Tags displays tags in their most compact form, with type (opening, closing, empty) but without name and attributes.
    • Show Medium Inline Tags displays tags with type and name but without attributes.
    • Show Filtered Inline Tags displays tags with type and name and some attributes specified in the XML format settings.
    • Show Long Inline Tags displays tags with type, name and all attributes.

    Tag Commands

This button contains various tag functions.

    • Insert All Tags inserts all formatting tags (tags that are present in the source segment and not inserted in the target segment) and inline tags into the target segment in the order of the source tags. Formatting tags start with {1} in every segment. If the target segment is not empty, memoQ checks which tags are present in the target, and inserts all the rest of the tags from the source in the same order at the current position. Default shortcut key: Alt+F8
    • Arrange Tags arranges the tags in the target segment based on the tag position in the source cell. No tags are added or deleted in the target cell. Default shortcut key: Alt+F6.
    • Remove All Tags removes all tags (formatting and inline tags) from the current target cell. Default shortcut key: Ctrl+F8.
    • Insert New Inline Tag opens a dialog where you can create a new inline tag into the target segment.
    • Insert New Inline Tag inserts a new inline tag into the target cell.
    • Edit Inline Tag lets you edit the highlighted inline tag. Shortcut key: Ctrl+F9.
