memoQ 8: Working with comments

Files can contain comments on segment level and on document level.

Bilingual files such as memoQ XLIFF or SDLXLIFF, which you import in your project, can also contain comments that translators will then see in memoQ when they work on the files.

In addition to memoQ file formats and two-column RTF, comments also get exported with SDLXLIFF files that were translated in memoQ. When exporting RTF documents, if the Export comments box is ticked in the export settings, memoQ creates an extra column in the table showing the comments from the selected documents. This option is turned on by default, so remember to change it if you don't want the exported RTF to contain any comments.

Comments in segments

Adding comments

Add a note to a segment by using the shortcut CTRL + M, or double clicking on the bubble, or using the Comments button in Translation and Review ribbons. When you have the Notes dialog open, you can view, edit or delete existing notes and add new notes.

  • You can leave comments for whole segments or only part of them, by selecting part of the text.
  • You can declare a severity level, which is more of a definition of the comment (Information, Warning, Error, Other)
  • Comments can apply to to source, target or the entire segment.

Filtering for commented segments

You can filter for all segments that contain comments in the Status tab in the filter options.

Appearance

Commented segment has a golden bubble. Empty bubbles are pale blue.

Deleting comments

You can delete an individual comment by simply clearing its content. You can also use the Clear Comments button on the Preparation ribbon to delete all comments from a project, file or selection.

Comments in documents

You can add a comment to a document in translations pane. Right-click on a document and select View/Edit Document Comments or double-click on the bubble.

Exporting comments and track changes into a Word file

You can export memoQ comments as comments in Word. Using the same command you can export tracked changes between 2 versions of the memoQ file to be shown as Word track changes. See more information on how to do this in memoQ help: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2015/help-en/exporting_comments_to_word_doc.html?.
