memoQ 9: Translation memories

Translation memories are the key major resources in memoQ and most other CAT tools.
They contain segment pairs from previous translation which are then used to leverage new text.
Matches from translation memories can also be browsed through the Concordance function.

STP uses strict naming conventions for TMs and other resources, see these links for more information: Naming conventions

Translation memories can be added and accessed by clicking the Translation memories pane in a project, which opens the Translation Memories ribbon . You can also access TMs directly from the Resource Console.

  • Create/Use New opens the New translation memory dialog where you can create a new, blank TM and attach it to the current project.
  • Register Local adds a local translation memory in *.MTM format to memoQ. This is rarely done at STP as our resources live exclusively on the server.
  • Clone creates a new TM with the same custom fields as the selected TM.
  • Properties displays the TM properties dialog. Users with access rights (PMs only for server resources) can change the TM name and metadata here.
  • Delete deletes a TM. Cannot be used if the TM is attached to a project.
  • Use In Project/Remove From Project attaches or unattaches the selected TM to or from the project.
  • Settings allows the PM to select TM settings for a TM.
  • Set As Working sets the selected TM as Working. The Working TM is the target for any segment that the translator confirms during translation.
During translation, this should be the project TM
  • Set As Master sets the selected TM as Master. The Master TM is the target for any segment that the translator or PM runs Confirm And Update on.
During translation, this should be the project TM
  • Edit opens the TM in the Translation Memory Editor where segments can be added, removed or edited.
  • Import from TMX/CSV opens a dialog for importing TMs in either of these formats into the selected memoQ TM.
  • Export To TMX exports the selected TM as a TMX file (an interchange format that most tools can utilize).
  • Repair Resource starts a wizard for repairing TMs. Use if memoQ warns you that the TM appears damaged.
  • Synchronize Offline creates a local copy of the selected online translation memory, or – if the local copy already exists – synchronizes the contents of the local and the remote copies: uploads any local changes, and downloads any remote changes. This section is only visible in checked out online projects. Note that most STP projects do not allow checking out TMs locally.
  • memoQ server allows you to select the memoQ server where you look for or access TMs. Note that you need to have access rights to the server.

During translation, TM matches are displayed in red with a ticked document icon in the Translation results together with their match percentage.
Right-clicking a match allows you to edit or delete the TM segment directly.
