memoQ 9: Basic navigation


When starting up memoQ 9, you are taken to the Dashboard. The memoQ 9 UI uses a ribbon interface, much like Microsoft Office, and the ribbons accessible to you vary with the mode you are currently in. Other important navigational units are the memoQ Application Menu, where all basic application commands are available, and the Quick Access Toolbar where common shortcut buttons can be placed. Both these are placed in the top left of the screen.

Managing projects

The projects display has a number of options:

  • The Search bar is a text filter - only projects matching whatever text you enter here will be displayed
  • The dropdown menu next to the Search bar allows you to select if All projects should be displayed or only Active or Recent projects. The latter is especially useful to weed out older project from your list (which cause clutter and lag).
  • The default mode displays one row of information per project, but with the Two-row view every project will occupy two rows and display more info on the project. You can also toggle the Details pane which, if active, will show all information on the selected project in a pane to the right of the screen.
  • The Sort dropdown menu allows you to sort all projects in the list by a number of parameters such as last accessed or project name.

Project home

Once a project has been opened, the Project home pane is displayed.

  • The Overview pane contains information about the project, users, analyses and project management functions.
    It also contains a Reports tab where you can run post-translation analysis and edit distance reports.
  • The Translations pane contains all files for translation in the project. Double click on a file to open it in the translation editor.
  • The People pane is not displayed in checked-out copies of online projects. It allows PMs to add, remove and grant usage rights to project users.
  • The LiveDocs, Translation memoriesTerm bases and Muses panes display any attached resources in these respective categories.
  • The Settings pane contains other project settings such as QA, segmentation etc.

  • For the translation files, the columns marked with # and Progress show you how much work you have left and how much you have done already, based on the type of counts you want to see. Right-click anywhere in this list of files to change between segments, words (total or weighted) and characters.

Translation editor 

Opening a file or view from the Translations pane opens them for editing in the Translation Editor.

  • The Translation grid is a table where the document contents are shown. You can type your translation in the second column. Above the grid is a number of functions relating to Filtering and sorting segments.
  • The Translation results lists any suggestions from resources used in the active projects. Suggestions can come from translation memories, term bases, auto-translation rules, and non-translatable lists. memoQ can also offer intelligent suggestions such as fragment-assembled text or automatic concordance (or longest substring concordance) results.   • The Real-time preview shows the formatted preview of the translation, which changes dynamically from the source language into the target language as you are progressing (provided the project has been set up to display a preview). You can also switch this view to display a segment-level review or the comments associated with the current segments.
